The project Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (MEGA) is the historico-critical edition of the complete published works, manuscripts and correspondence of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.

The edition is committed exclusively to the philological principles of fidelity to the original and completeness. Many manuscripts from the literary nachlass of Marx and Engels are published here for the first time. The publication provides a comprehensive documentation of the development of each text in manuscripts and print editions and combines this with detailed scholarly commentary.

This Academy Edition of Marx and Engels is divided into four sections: Section I - Books, articles and drafts; Section II - Das Kapital and its preliminary studies, in which all versions of the text of Marx’s economic magnum opus are presented and for the first time the extensive, but incomplete and unpublished manuscript of the work has been deciphered and reconstructed; Section III - Correspondence; and Section IV - Excerpts, notes and marginalia.

114 volumes are planned, 62 of them have already been published. In the future, a cumulative digital version of the text, apparatus and indices of all the manuscripts of Das Kapital – now published here entirety – and of the editions published in the lifetimes of Marx and Engels will supplement and enhance the print edition by enabling more convenient research strategies.

The Academy research project “The Complete Works of Marx and Engels” is part of the Academies' Programme , a research funding programme co-financed by the German federal government and individual federal states. Coordinated by the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities , the Programme intends to retrieve and explore our cultural heritage, to make it accessible and highlight its relevance to the present, as well as to preserve it for the future.
