Funding
Der Regierende Bürgermeister von Berlin, Senatskanzlei – Wissenschaft und Forschung, based on an application by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, is funding the Interdisciplinary Research Network for Digital Humanities in Berlin. The research network is coordinated by the BBAW.
What are Digital Humanities?
Both in Germany and worldwide computer-based research in the humanities has developed at great speed in the last two decades. In Berlin in universities and non-university institutions a large number of ambitious projects, initiatives and activities have come into being. The Digital Humanities (DH) as an interdisciplinary research field use digital technology to investigate topics that are authentically part of the humanities and integrate the scholarly and scientific activities that preserve, analyse, interpret and present records of human culture, in single- or multi-media form.
Goals
The Interdisciplinary Research Network creates a forum to strengthen the common interest in research, teaching and sustainable provision of data across the boundaries of established subjects and organisations. Working collaboratively it is intended to develop and raise the visibility of the services and skills in the field of Digital Humanities in and around Berlin. The members of the network are also developing a concept for sustainably anchoring research and teaching in Digital Humanities as part of the outstanding humanities landscape in Berlin. Furthermore, they are elaborating a concept for a regional ‘Digital Humanities Data Centre’ to ensure the long-term availability of humanities research data, in which synergies can be created in the generation, curation and provision of data for subsequent research, inter alia by the promotion of standards and interoperability.
Fields of activity
The Interdisciplinary Research Network Digital Humanities in Berlin offers various opportunities to deepen the exchange of experiences and skills across organisations:
In the Berlin DH Forums “teaching ” and “long-term provision of data ”, involving national and international experts, will target current challenges and work out routes to solutions across different institutions.
The ‘Berlin DH Tour ’ allows interested parties to gain a better overview of the many DH initiatives, their working methods and products. This on-site tour of the activities of others active in the field conveys a clear picture of the skills and plans of the partners in the network.
The ifDHb Office draws up an annual Berlin DH Report , which offers an overview of current developments in research, teaching and long-term provision of digital humanities data and thereby creates transparency for the Berlin DH community.
The Memorandum for the Sustainable Support of Digital Humanities in Berlin has been signed by numerous scholars and scientists and was submitted to the Berlin Senate’s Department of Business, Technology and Research.
The ifDHb covers all research projects from the sphere of Digital Humanities that have at least one project-partner in Berlin. All courses of teaching relevant to the sphere of DH and taught at Berlin colleges and universities are also encompassed by it.
