Bio-Resources from oceans

Throughout history oceans have been critical to human civilization. They affect weather and climate, serve as a major route of human dispersion, trade and transport, and represent a significant contribution to recreation and tourism. In particular, they provide important natural resources. In modern times, the overall effect of man’s interface with the oceans, although becoming more and more important economically, is clearly non-sustainable. While utilising the oceans in a variety of ways, man gives back only waste of various origins and impacts, and threatens natural resources by over-exploitation.

This workshop, part of a series on Sustainable Economics, is focused on an in-depth consideration of the potential of utilizing the biological wealth of the oceans for human benefit while at the same time critically considering the associated serious impacts and measures for their control.

Particular emphasis is placed on an interdisciplinary discussion of the subject over the whole spectrum of the sciences and humanities.
